Teddy Tamgho is one of the world’s greatest triple jumpers, holding the current world indoor record of 17.92 meters. Several days ago he ruptured his achilles tendon, surprising considering that he is only 25 years old.
A device is used to attach sutures to the tendon, and pull the sutures outside and inside the skin. The resulting horizontal scar is much smaller than the typical vertical scar left after traditional surgery.
33-year-old star Saint Louis starting pitcher Adam Wainwright ruptured his achilles tendon last week. He did this while batting, in the process reigniting the debate about whether the National League should become like the American League and get a designated hitter for a pitcher.
Wainwright said he knew almost immediately that something had happened to his Achilles. The tip off came when he asked manager Mike Matheny what had struck him and he was told that nothing had, a common sensation when an Achilles is injured.
